Venice AI Alternative: A Fair Review and When to Switch

You need a Venice AI alternative only if Venice's model doesn't fit you: it's a strong private, open-source-model chat app with a real free tier, priced from $18 to $200 a month (as of October 2026). Look elsewhere if you want history kept in your account rather than your browser, one simple plan without credits, an adults-only service, or chat, live search with sources and images bundled at a flat price.

Is Venice AI free? Give me the actual limits, not the marketing.

Unrestricted AI

Yes, there's a free plan. Per Venice's pricing page (checked October 2026):

Free, $0: base models only, 10 text prompts a day, 15 image prompts a day, no monthly credits. API use is paid with credits.

Pro, $18/mo: unlimited text prompts, 1,000 images a day, Pro models, and 100 credits a month for video, music and premium models.

Bottom line: fine for testing or light daily use. If you chat a lot, you'll hit the 10-prompt cap fast and land on Pro.

Venice AI in 60 seconds

In short

Venice is a private, uncensored-positioned AI app that launched in 2024. GeekWire reported Erik Voorhees as CEO and Jesse Proudman as CTO, and described a crypto token (VVV) that can be staked for API capacity. Its own tagline is “Private, unrestricted AI for everyone.” The product runs open-source models, offers chat, image generation and, on paid plans, video and music via credits.

Strengths

What Venice does well

Working free tier, web search on every plan, chat history stored locally in your browser, privacy modes up to end-to-end encryption on paid tiers, a public API.

Trade-offs

Where it may not fit

History tied to one browser by default, a credit system for premium features, many plans to choose from, and a minimum age of 13 rather than 18.

The alternative

Unrestricted AI

Chat that refuses far less, live search with clickable sources, image generation on Max. History in your account, adults only, no free plan.

From venice.ai/pricing, checked October 2026. Venice states 100 credits = $1.

Two things to note. First, the jump from Pro to Pro Plus is mostly about credits, which pay for video, music, frontier models and API calls. If you only chat, Pro covers you. Second, the matrix lists document uploads, image understanding and custom system prompts as paid features, not free ones.

Is Venice AI free?

Yes, genuinely. The free plan gives 10 text prompts and 15 image prompts a day on base models, plus web search. That's enough to judge whether Venice's answers suit you. It's not enough for daily heavy use: ten messages go quickly in a real conversation, and Pro models, document uploads and custom system prompts sit behind the $18 plan.

For comparison, Unrestricted AI has no free plan or free trial at all. We say that up front because it's the first thing people ask. The reason is simple: no free tier means no ads and no selling data to pay for free users.

Is Venice AI safe? Privacy and content, on the record

“Safe” means two different things here: is your data safe, and is the content appropriate for who's using it. Here's what Venice's own pages say, without spin.

  • 01StorageVenice says conversation history is kept on your device and never stored on its servers.
  • 02Processing modesits privacy page describes several. In “Anonymous” mode requests are relayed to third-party model providers, which it says see and likely save the prompt. “Private” mode relies on contracts under which no prompt or response is stored. Paid tiers add hardware-isolated (TEE) and end-to-end encrypted options.
  • 03Content rulesthe terms ban illegal use, exploiting minors, using someone's likeness without consent, and automated scraping of the web interface, among others.
  • 04Agethe terms set a minimum age of 13, with parental consent required under 18, and a mature filter that minors may not bypass.
Our read

Venice's privacy design is more thoughtful than most consumer AI apps, and it's explicit about which mode protects what. Choose the mode deliberately. Parents should know the service is open to teens with consent; Unrestricted AI is 18+ only.

When Venice is the right choice

  • You want to try a less-filtered assistant for free, today.
  • Privacy is your top priority and you like the idea of history living only in your browser.
  • You need an API for your own app or agent and want to pay with the same credits.
  • You want video and music generation alongside chat.
  • You enjoy picking and switching between open-source models.

If those are your boxes, stay on Venice. Switching for the sake of it makes no sense.

When a Venice AI alternative makes more sense

  • 01You use several devices.Browser-local history is private, but it lives on one device by default. Moving it means backup and restore, a Pro feature. Account-based history is simpler if you hop from laptop to phone.
  • 02You hate credit math.Venice's premium features run on credits. Some people prefer one flat plan with clear allowances.
  • 03You want an adults-only service.Venice allows 13+ with consent. We're 18+, full stop.
  • 04You want answers you can check. Our chat runs live web search and shows clickable sources inside the answer.
  • 05You don't want to pick models. We give you one assistant tuned to refuse far less and skip the lectures, with a more permissive model on Max.

Other Venice AI alternatives worth a look

Generic “alternatives” lists send Venice users to mainstream assistants, which misses the point: if you came to Venice for fewer refusals or more privacy, ChatGPT-style tools are a step backwards. These are the realistic options, with facts from each official site as of October 2026.

  • 01FreedomGPTone app with a large catalog of models, web search and image tools on a free tier; Pro is $20/mo with 2,200 credits. Closest to Venice's pick-your-model approach.
  • 02NoFilterGPTthe cheapest paid option at $11.99/mo, with image generation and an API. Its site says the model works without internet queries, so no live search.
  • 03Uncensored AI (uncensored.com)many models with side-by-side comparison, real-time web search and a code mode. No public pricing page when we checked.
  • 04A local open modelmaximum privacy and no subscription, if you have the hardware. Our explainer on abliterated models covers how many of these are made.
  • 05Unrestricted AIone assistant, far fewer refusals, live search with sources, images on the Max plan, adults only, no free plan.

Switching from Venice without losing anything

  1. Save what matters first. Venice keeps history in your browser, so clearing site data or changing device can wipe it. Copy out conversations you want to keep, or use Pro's encrypted backup.
  2. Bring your best prompts. Pick five prompts Venice handled well and five it handled badly. Run all ten on the new tool before you commit.
  3. Check the billing logic. Compare what your monthly use actually costs under each plan, credits included.
  4. Read the rules. Every service draws lines somewhere. Ours are short and public; read them before you rely on any tool for sensitive work.

Running both for a month is also fine. Many people keep a free Venice account for quick private queries and pay for one main assistant.

10 questions
01Is Venice AI free?

Yes. As of October 2026, Venice's free plan gives 10 text prompts and 15 image prompts per day on base models, with web search included and no monthly credits. Pro costs $18 a month and unlocks unlimited text prompts, 1,000 images a day, Pro models and 100 credits for premium features. Pro Plus is $68 and Max is $200 a month.

02Is Venice AI safe to use?

For privacy, Venice says chat history stays on your device and not on its servers, and it offers private, hardware-isolated and end-to-end encrypted processing modes, some on paid plans only. Note that its Anonymous mode relays prompts to third-party providers. For content, its terms allow users from 13 with parental consent, so it isn't an adults-only service.

03Is Venice AI really uncensored?

It's far less restrictive than mainstream assistants and markets itself as private and unrestricted, but it isn't rule-free. Its terms ban illegal use, exploiting minors and using someone's likeness without consent, and a mature filter applies to minors. How permissive an answer feels can also depend on which model you pick inside the app.

04What is the best Venice AI alternative?

It depends on why you're leaving. For more model choice, FreedomGPT. For the lowest paid price, NoFilterGPT at $11.99 a month. For full control and privacy, a local open model. For chat and live web search with sources in one adults-only app with account-based history, plus images on the Max plan, Unrestricted AI, which has no free tier.

05Who owns Venice AI?

Venice launched in 2024. A March 2025 GeekWire report named Erik Voorhees as CEO and Jesse Proudman as CTO, described the company as bootstrapped, and covered its VVV token, which can be staked for a share of API inference capacity. Venice's own about page focuses on privacy and open-source models rather than ownership details.

06Is Venice AI private?

It's more private by design than most chat apps, according to its official privacy page. Venice says conversation history stays on your device and is never stored on its servers. In its default Private mode, no prompt or response is stored, enforced by contracts rather than technical design. Pro adds hardware-isolated and end-to-end encrypted modes. In Anonymous mode, Venice says you should assume the provider stores your content.

07Does Venice AI save your chats?

Not on its servers, according to its official privacy page (checked October 2026). History is kept on your device, so clearing browser data or switching devices can lose it; Pro includes an encrypted chat backup. One exception to note: in Anonymous mode, Venice says the third-party provider may store your content. Unrestricted AI works the other way: history lives in your account until you delete it, and is erased within 30 days if you close your account.

08Does Venice AI have an app?

Yes. As of October 2026, Venice's official download page lists apps for iPhone and iPad on the App Store, Android on Google Play, and a direct Android APK. Its help center also explains how to add the web app to your home screen from Safari or Chrome. Unrestricted AI keeps it simpler: no store app, it runs in your mobile or desktop browser, with history tied to your account.

09What model does Venice AI use?

Many. As of October 2026, Venice's official models page lists more than 100 text models from labs including OpenAI, Google, DeepSeek, Qwen and Mistral, plus its own Venice Uncensored, described as a 24B open-weight model built on Mistral architecture. Base models come with the free plan; Pro and frontier models need paid tiers. Refusal behavior varies by model, so your pick shapes how permissive Venice feels.

10Is Venice AI better than ChatGPT?

It depends on what you value. Venice suits you better if you want fewer refusals and history kept on your device; as of October 2026, its free plan allows 10 text prompts a day. ChatGPT's pricing page lists unlimited free text chats subject to abuse guardrails, plus tools like voice, deep research and memory, all under OpenAI's usage policies. For low refusals with account-based history, see our plans.
